Mechanics of Multi-Tiered Bonuses

8 min read

Hold-and-spin and tiered jackpot features dominate the modern floor. Their appeal is that every tier looks reachable. Their mathematics is that almost all of the value sits in the bottom two.

How the tiers are weighted

Mini and minor awards make up the overwhelming majority of feature outcomes. Major and grand are weighted so thinly that they contribute a small share of the feature's total return despite carrying the marketing.

The feature's expected value is therefore close to the value of its small awards, and a grand-level jackpot changes that figure far less than it changes how the game feels.

Bet-level gating

Many titles restrict the top tiers to maximum bet, or scale awards with bet size. Playing below the qualifying level while chasing a gated tier is strictly negative.

Either fund the qualifying bet properly or treat the game as a base-game-only proposition.

Where the real edge is

Persistent collection meters feeding into these features are the exception — that is where leftover progress creates genuine value, exactly as in Week 5.

Absent leftover progress, a hold-and-spin game is a high-variance base game with excellent presentation.

This week on the floor

  • · On your usual hold-and-spin title, record what each tier actually pays at your bet level.
  • · Count how many features you trigger and what each returned.
  • · Compare the total to what you put through the game.

The grand sells the game. The minor funds it.
