Week 09 of 12
Operational Bankroll Preservation
10 min read
Edge without survival is worthless. Bankroll management is the mechanism that lets a small advantage actually be realised instead of being wiped out by ordinary variance.
Risk of ruin
Ruin is not a matter of being wrong. A genuine edge played with insufficient bankroll still busts a meaningful share of the time purely through normal swings.
The controllable variables are bet size and bankroll. Edge is largely given to you by game selection.
Kelly, and why you play a fraction of it
Full Kelly sizing maximises long-run growth but produces swings most people cannot stomach or fund. Serious practitioners play a quarter to a half of it.
On slots, where the edge is small and variance is extreme, fractional Kelly usually means bet sizes well below what the floor tempts you toward.
Separating the accounts
Play bankroll, tax reserve and living money must be three separate pools. The tax reserve is not yours to gamble — the liability exists whether or not the money is still there in April.
The profit-lock rule in this app enforces exactly that separation: a locked share, a tax reserve, and a defined reinvestment budget.
This week on the floor
- · State your total play bankroll as a single number and your maximum bet as a fraction of it.
- · Set the profit-lock percentages in the app to match that plan.
- · Move your tax reserve out of the play bankroll entirely.
The tax reserve is not part of the bankroll.
